Chapter 11

Taylor

“Agent Bronson?! Are you fucking kidding me, Taylor?!”

Colton, my oldest brother, fumes, whirling, his fists clenched.

“Colton—”

“The F.B. fucking I., Taylor? Are you out of your fucking mind?”

My brow furrows, eyes narrowing angrily. “Am I out of my mind to do a job I’m great at, and one I really like?”

“It’s dangerous.”

“I’m trained.”

“And yet, here you are covered in bruises after getting into a fucking fist fight with Law Banner right before you almost went up in flames in a chemical fire,” he spits back.

I get it, he’s mad. And he loves me, which is making him even more mad. For one, that I lied about what I did for a living, and for two, because what happened today was dangerous. Colton’s the one who watched out for me after our parents died. Before, he was this big shot rodeo star, touring the country, on the covers of magazines, the new face of a national deodorant ad campaign. He was big time, but when mom and dad went too soon, he came home and gave it all up to make sure I was taken care of.

So, I get it. I get that this seems like a slap in the face. Or at the least, a betrayal of trust.

In a way, I’m glad it’s just Colton chewing me out about this. My other brother, Shepherd, and his wife Chastity are off on vacation on the west coast. And Silas and Winona are tied up with the construction of their new distillery for Silas’s company. So, for now at least, it’s just one of my older and protective relatives scolding me.

“I couldn’t just tell you, you know,” I mutter. “It’s the freaking FBI, Colton, and I was undercover. And they don’t mean ‘undercover but it’s cool if you tell your brother so he doesn’t worry,’ you know,” I spit. “What do you want from me? This is my job, Colton.”

“Your job to barge into Lawson fucking Banner’s bar with gun and a badge?” he shoots right back. “What are you, Wyatt fucking Earp?”

I glare at him.

“Says the man in the cowboy hat.”

Behind him, Colton’s wife, Tara, snorts, covering her mouth to hide the grin.

“Yes, dear,” my brother grumbles.

Tara just grins, coming up behind him and sliding an arm around his waist as she pulls tight. I like Tara a lot. She’s been good for my brother, that’s for sure, even with the insane way they tumbled into each other.

“Maybe lighten up a little, huh?” She smiles, patting Colton’s chest. “She was just doing her job, babe, and if she’s in the FBI at her age, I think it’s 'cause they know she can do it.”

“Thank you,” I say primly, eyeing my brother.

His face stays scowling, even if I see his hand wrap around Tara’s shoulders.

“I wear a cowboy hat because I own a horse ranch, Taylor,” he growls. “And you’re dodging the question. Are you even fucking old enough for the FBI?”

“Dear,” Tara mutters.

“What?” he grumbles back. “I have a right to be concerned, baby.
